Sabine Taschner-Mandl earns FWF-Stand-Alone-Grant

(Vienna, 10.4.2022) Congratulations to Sabine Taschner-Mandl, PhD, and her team on being awarded a Stand-Alone Grant by the Austrian Science Fund FWF.

“We aim at mapping tumor metastases by multi-modal imaging to better understand the heterogeneity of childhood nerve tumors and their microenvironment. Mapping tumor cell dissemination can help to refine diagnosis and to improve treatment of these tumors in the future,” explains Sabine Taschner-Mandl, PI of the Tumor Biology Group at St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute.

The scientist and her colleagues are investigating neuroblastoma, a tumor of the peripheral nervous system that affects children and adolescents. Metastasis is very often associated with poor survival rates in these patients. “That is why we have set ourselves the goal of using multimodal imaging to create a map of the tumor and its dissemination”, says Sabine Taschner-Mandl. In their project, the scientists apply innovative techniques, including automated immunofluorescence microscopy combined with imaging mass cytometry and deep learning based image analyses.
