Make an impact – find a cure. Today is Rare Disease Day!
Make an impact – find a cure
300 million sounds like a lot but those 300 million people worldwide who are suffering from rare diseases mark only 3.87% of the world’s population. If you are the only one in a group of 2,000, chances are your condition is not a top priority of diagnostic- and treatment research. This results in a lack of scientific knowledge and oftentimes in misdiagnosis or wrong treatment of symptoms. The key to providing better care for patients around the globe with rare diseases lies in improving awareness for rare diseases. Increased awareness is then the basis for more research efforts, like the ones conducted at St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute (St. Anna CCRI). With childhood cancer categorizing as a rare disease, finding a cure is at the forefront of our researchers’ goals.

On this Rare Disease Day on February 28, 2022, St. Anna CCRI has partnered up with Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Rare and Undiagnosed Diseases, Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and Medical University Vienna in a joint effort to do exactly that: creating awareness for rare diseases and the important work these institutions do to tackle some of these unusual conditions. And this is exactly what these 300 million people need – dedicated researchers that aim for change for the affected patients, their families, and carers.
